Dental implants are structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are attached to the jawbone and act as a foundation for artificial teeth or permanent bridge. If you are in good general health, have healthy gums and have enough bone in the jaw to hold an implant, dental implants might be right for you.
In the first phase of your dental implant surgery, your dentists will place the implants in your jawbone. It can take 3-6 months for the bone to fuse to the implants. After the bone has fused to the implant it's time for the second face. During the 2nd phase, your dentists will place an extension or post to extend the implants above the gum. Once the gums are healed, on your final visit, the restoration or dental appliance is placed and adjusted to insure the proper fit and function.
The artificial replacement teeth attached to implants look and act much like natural teeth. Like natural teeth, implants need to be kept clean on a regular basis using a toothbrush and floss.
