Dry mouth is a condition that is caused by the diminished saliva production. It is commonly a side affect from different types of medication, however dry mouth can also be caused by a problem with the salivary glands, aging, tobacco use, nerve damage or other health conditions, and meth. Saliva neutralizes acids created by bacteria, washes away food particles and limits bacterial growth thus preventing tooth decay. Saliva enhances your ability to taste, and that is important for the enjoyment of food and your appetite. You may have dry mouth if you notice some of these symptoms: dryness in mouth and/or throat, bad breath, difficulty speaking and swallowing, a changed sense of taste and thick or stringy saliva.
Without enough saliva, you can develop: increased plaque, tooth decay or gum disease, mouth sores, cracked lips, fungal infection in your mouth, sores or splits at the corners of your mouth. The treatment for dry mouth varies depending on the cause. You might be recommended to change medications that cause dry mouth, or you will be given products to help moisturize your mouth. If the situation is more severe the treatment ranges from medication to help stimulate saliva production, to fluoride trays to protect your teeth. Sip water often and avoid smoking.
