Porcelain veneers, also known as dental veneers, are pieces of thin porcelain that are placed on your teeth to recreate the natural look of teeth. In addition, they provide extra strength and resilience just like natural tooth enamel. Porcelain veneers are the most common choice for people seeking to change their tooth shape, size or small alterations to the position. Due to veneers being custom made, it is very difficult to tell the difference between an natural tooth and a veneer. However, custom made veneers resist stains such as cigarette smoke and coffee or tea stains.
During your first visit, your teeth will be lightly buffed to allow for the added thickness of the veneer. Usually, about a half a millimeter of the tooth is removed. During the same visit, a mold is taken of your teeth, and sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers.
During your final visit, the porcelain veneers are placed on the tooth surfaces, with water or glycerin on the teeth to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or colour. To apply the veneers, your teeth are cleansed with specific chemicals to achieve a bond. Once a special cement is sandwiched between the veneer and tooth, a visible light beam or laser, causes a catalyst to be released, hardening the cement.
